Biography

Matthew Tillett

My investment philosophy combines fundamental analysis with a contrarian streak. I particularly like situations where there has been lots of bad news, expectations are low, and the general tone is one of panic or widespread investor apathy. These are often where the greatest opportunities can be found. As such, my investment style tends to have a value and contrarian bias, although I do not set out to achieve this. I am an unconstrained investor, which means equity benchmarks have no influence on the stocks I buy or sell. I am also a believer in concentration. For me, great investment ideas should be backed by conviction positions, such that they can materially improve performance.

In my spare time, I love playing chess. People often tell me that chess is like investing, a claim I would dispute. Chess is much more frustrating! I enjoy a regular game of squash, but wish I was fit enough to last more than 30 minutes. I also like swimming, 5-a-side football and indoor rock climbing. The hedonistic side of my character is expressed through a love of fine wine. Look out for me at the Decanter and Wine Society tastings.
